Well doc, I've changed my mind...
My wife and I considered having me get a vasectomy after my youngest daughter was born.
But then we remembered that we were married with two kids, which means we don't have sex. ;-)
I kid, I kid... well, sorta...
BUT, when I considered it, I also looked into the chances for a vasectomy reversal it if we I ever felt the urge to procreate again. I'd always been told that a reversal only had a success rate of about 50%, and that went down as you got further and further away from the original surgery. However, advances in microsurgical techniques have improved those chances.
Dr. Douglas Schow, the Vasectomy Reversal Doctor who established the MMHC National Vasectomy Reversal Center, has published success rates of 97% for patients with vasectomies less than 13 years prior, and 93% with patients more than 13 years removed from the original surgery.
In a vasectomy, the Vas Deferens are cut, keeping the sperm from mingling in with the ejaculate; in a reverse vasectomy, the ends are sewn back together using microscopic threads and instruments, allowing the sperm to make the trip from the testicles.
The MMHC center accepts patients from all over the country, and Dr. Schow performs 4-6 surgeries each week. I don't know about you, but I prefer the doc that's working on that area of my body to be well-practiced!
